Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) is a civil court process for adults with a primary mental health diagnosis who struggle to engage in treatment voluntarily, often leading to hospitalization or harm. Eligible individuals typically have a history of not following treatment, including past hospitalizations or incarceration, and are unlikely to participate without court involvement.

The law allows certain individuals to petition for AOT, including a parent, spouse, adult child, adult sibling, or roommate. Certain medical professionals may also file a petition, such as hospital directors, surrogate decision-makers, directors of residential treatment facilities, doctors or nurses specializing in mental health, and the district attorney.
